General Information:

 

SOS Hermann Gmeiner College Dhaka is one of the Education Projects of SOS Children’s Village International in Bangladesh. Named after its founder Dr. Hermann Gmeiner, the college was established on 19 January 1986 in order to provide quality education to the children of SOS Children’s Village Dhaka as well as those of Mirpur and its adjoining areas.The school is run by a Special Governing Body approved by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Dhaka. The institution aims at developing children to their full potential. For this equal emphasis is laid on students’ achieving excellence in both academic and extra-curricular activities. Up to 2011 a total of 1459 and 1933 students have passed the SSC and HSC examinations respectively from this institution.

Curriculum:   The syllabuses of different classes are based on those prescribed by National Curriculum and Text-Book Board (NTCB) and students take their SSC and HSC exams under the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Dhaka. The college provides an excellent environment and adequate facilities for standard education. Teachers are highly motivated and disciplined. Their professional training is given utmost importance. The progress of each student is closely monitored and necessary measures are taken to overcome any shortcomings inclose co-operation with the concerned guardians. For this, parents-teachers meetings are an integral part of our academic calendar.

Intake:   New students are admitted in Class – I and in Class – XI at the beginning of the academic year. Notice regarding such admissions is given on the college notice board in due time. Admission in Class – I was done through lottery for the first time in 2012. Admission in Class – XI is done as per Admission Policy of the Ministry of Education. New admissions are also done in Class – IX Business Studies Group. Admission in other classes are done subject to availability of vacant seats.

Exams and Evaluation:  The academic year is divided into two terms. During each term students are assessed on the basis of their performance in Class Test, Class Work, home Work, Oral Presentation, Group Work and Assignments. A Term Exam is held at the end of each term. The final result is determined by calculating the average result of two terms.

Physical Facilities:   The College is housed in a U-shaped 2 storied, spacious, red-brick building standing on 2.1acres of land at Mirpur- Section 13.The building is a testimony of modern architecture. Apart from 27 well-planned classrooms the facilities include a playground, a basketball court, an auditorium, a library and labs for Physics,Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science.

Daily Activities:   A typical day at SOS Hermann Gmeiner College Dhaka begins with the Morning Assembly at 8. The assembly is attended by all students and teachers of the college. The assembly starts with recitation from the holy Quran and is followed by singing of the National Anthem and offering the SOS Prayer. The Principal addresses the Assembly on important occasions. After the assembly students return to their respective classrooms and classes start at 8:20.

Extra-curricular Activities:   To encourage the all-round development of the students a lot of emphasis is laid on Extra-Curricular activities. Different clubs such as Debating Club, Science Club, Math Club and Cultural Club have their own activities. ‘Hermann Gmeiner Week’ is observed from 17-23 June every year and competitions are held on a wide range of cultural activities. The College Foundation Day (19 Jan), Annual Milad, Annual Sports and important National Days are also observed regularly.

Hermann Gmeiner Scholarship Programme:  Every year Hermann Gmeiner Scholarships are awarded to meritorious and needy students. The scholarship is also awarded to students for outstanding achievements in Extra-Curricular Competitions. One teacher also receives the Hermann Gmeiner Academic Award.

Academic and Extra-Curricular Achievements:  The results of the students of SOS Hermann Gmeiner College Dhaka indifferent public examinations have always been one of the best in the country. For instance, 79 students sat for the SSC Examinations of 2011 and all of them came out successful and among them 74 students got GPA 5. In the HSC Examinations of 2011, 102 students took part and 99 came out successful. Among the successful students 77 got GPA 5. On the basis of performance SOS Hermann Gmeiner College Dhaka got the 11th and 13th place respectively in the SSC and HSC Examinations of 2011 under Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education(BISE) Dhaka. In the SSC Examinations of 2012, 79 and 35 students took part from Science and Business Studies groups respectively. All the students came out successful. Among the students of Science group 66 got GPA - 5 and among those of Business Studies 14 got GPA - 5. In the HSC Examinations of 2012, 111students took part of whom 110 came out successful. Among them 94 students got GPA-5. On the basis of this performance our college got the 10th Position on the Merit List of Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Dhaka.

Result of SSC and HSC Examinations:

SSC- 80 students sat for the SSC Examinations of 2013 in Science Group. Of them 79 came successful and 68 got GPA 5.

  38 students sat for the SSC Examinations of 2013 in Business Studies Group and all of them came out successful. 8 students got GPA 5.

HSC- 112 students took the HSC Examinations of 2013 in Science Group. Of them 110 passed and 2 (1 regular and 1 irregular) failed. Among the successful students 92 got GPA 5. On the basis of the results SOS Hermann Gmeiner College Dhaka secured 12th position on the Merit List of Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE), Dhaka.
